Homes Sales $500K and Above--Bellingham and Whatcom County

In the current market, home sales in the $300,000 and below range are strong. However, higher priced home sales continue to struggle. In particular, sales of homes above $500,000 are especially weak.
 
This graph shows the number of homes that sold for $500,000 or more during the first three quarters of 2009 compared to the first three quarters of 2008. Notice that in Bellingham, 95 homes sold for $500,000 or more in 2008, and 90 sold in 2009. The drop in sales in this price range is relatively small.
 
In comparison, in Whatcom County, 76 homes sold for $500,000 or more in 2008, and only 44 sold in 2009--a substantial drop in sales at that price range.
 
This drop in sales in the $500,000+ price range during 2009 in Whatcom County provides some explanation for why higher priced homes in Whatcom County are selling for such low prices.
