If you are in good hiking shape, and you only do one hike this summer, hike to Ptarmigan Ridge. This is long--12 miles, and sometimes challenging, but the nicest hike, with the best payoff at the end of any hike I've been on.
On the way up and back, we saw three groups of mountain goats. The first group consisted of mothers nursing their kids, and a ram making sure we kept our distance. The last group included mothers nursing their kids while lying on a glacier.
The pinacle at the end of the trail is surrounded by glaciers. Both sides are a sheer drop-off to the glaciers below. Humbling. Mt Baker looms above in the not-to-far-off distance, about 5,000 above us.
