This is the destination of the hike to Heleotrope Ridge--Coleman Glacier on Mt Baker. It is difficult to comprehend the size of what you are seeing. The peaks and valleys of this part of the glacier are perhaps 20 feet top to bottom.
I am told that the Cascades are now home to the greatest number of glaciers in the contiguous US. Most glaciers are shrinking fast. This glacier is much much smaller than it was 10 years ago.
The hike is moderate to difficult. About 4 miles in and 4 miles out. The hike in is steep. The hike out is easy. The weather this day was perfect--slight breeze, no clouds.
